Nail Trimming and Filing is a harmless but necessary event that most pets are used to and do not mind. If your pet has not been trained to accept necessary grooming practices or has experienced trauma in a previous home, they may need to learn to trust you, the vet and grooming professionals. We do not service pets that panic or bite unless the pet is on a bi-monthly schedule and the owner agrees to work with the pet in between appointments on training and learning to accept and actually like their nail trims. This is very possible to accomplish, but it does take commitment from the owner. We love to help with this! However we will not place our nail specialists at risk of being injured or bitten by your pet. While we are working through this the owner must be able to control their pet and/or hold the pet in a safe position for nail trimming. It is never our nail specialists job to forcefully restrain a pet or risk being bitten and payment for the service call is required even if the nail trim cannot be accomplished.
Can you hear clicking on the floor from your pet's nails? Nail Neglect is a very big problem for many pets and can lead to pain and irreversible medical issues. A dog and cats nail consists of a living quick (like a vein) and a harder outer shell. The quick provides blood to the nail and runs through the core of it. If nails are neglected the quick gets too long. With each nail trim, the quick will recede a little and return to a proper length. Nails that are too long can cause splayed feet, injured tendons and loss of traction. Nails should be trimmed every 2-4 weeks and if they have not been regularly trimmed, it may take several months for nails to return to a healthy length.
Cat's need nail trims also. They will scratch against wood and scratching posts and a layer of nail will be removed, but this does not shorten the nail and they remain sharp. We also offer soft claws for cats.
We do ask that the owner is home for our first appointment and meeting. After that we can determine if your pet is a candidate for our latchkey program. If so we can add you to our regular rotation and you won't need to be home. We keep your key or code secure and you can be invoiced in advance or leave cash payment.
Full Grooming is available in a climate controlled, private area of your home where there will be little distraction. There is a wait list for most areas. Use the contact form to ask us if this is available in your area.
Claws loves doing events! At our events we set up at a pet friendly business or market and trim nails at a discounted price as well as sell hand made accessories for pets. We will be adding more events soon!
